Learning the Art of Good Photography

Capturing the moment is a full time job™
Marc Blake, a photographer from Fresno

While most of us feel that we can take a relatively decent pictures, there are many elements that go together to create good photography. To start with the majority of us rely on a simple snapshot camera for the picture we take and for the most part today's digital cameras take good pictures. However, if you are ready to step up to the next level and create professional looking pictures, the first thing you may want to do is purchase one of the newest digital SLR cameras and enroll in a class or two to learn how to use your camera to achieve the results you are after.

One thing that you need to realize is that going out and buying the most expensive camera you can afford is no guarantee of good photography. Like any tool a camera is only as good as the person behind the lens. This is where taking the time to learn how your camera really works will pay off. Today's cameras are computer controlled and loaded with an amazing array of features that can be used to create amazing pictures as long as you know how to use them.

More than a feature rich fancy cameras or hours of classroom time, good photography is all about the person who is taking the pictures. It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and nowhere is that more true than in photography. To be a good photographer you need to learn about composition. When you look at a picture that takes your breath away it is because the photographer understood how to compose the picture is such a way as to get you to see the focal point of the shot in the same way as he viewed the original person or place that he was capturing with his camera.

In reality good photography is an art form and those who use their cameras to create pictures are true artists. Most professional photographers apply the rule of thirds to their pictures whereby the shot is divided into thirds creating intersecting points that can be used to establish the focal point for the composition. By keeping things in proportion, using the available lighting to highlight the subject and keeping the rest of the picture in balance you will soon be creating amazing pictures that your friends and family will love.

If you really want to learn more about the fine art of good photography, you will find that many professional photographers like Marc Blake offer courses online designed specifically to help you learn what it takes. In many cases these courses will cover the basics of using your camera and move on to cover artistic composition, balance and many of the finer details that the professional has already learned. While these short courses may not make you a pro, they are designed to help you learn to step out of the snapshot box and take the kind of pictures you can be proud of.
